Real Stories. Real Training. Real Growth.

About the Series

Client Conversations is where we get real about what dog training actually looks and feels like — the progress, the frustration, the “am I doing this right?” moments.

These are real stories from the clients I work with and the lessons that come out of those honest, sometimes uncomfortable, but always valuable conversations.

Because dog training isn’t just about the dog. It’s about what we learn about ourselves along the way.

Today’s Story: The Crate at Work

A client of mine recently walked in on some pretty discouraging comments from coworkers about her dog being in a crate at work.

Before we get into that, here’s the backstory: This client has worked her ass off to get to where she is today. Her goal when we first started months ago was simple — she wanted to be able to take her dog to work.

And if I’m being honest with you (because I already was with her), I wasn’t sure that would be possible. Her dog is a lot. He came in hot — driven, busy, the type to parkour off furniture and stare at you until you cracked. Definitely not the “I’ll just nap under your desk all day” kind.

So for her to put in the time, structure, and follow-through to make that goal a reality? That’s huge. I couldn’t be prouder of both of them.

When Opinions Get Loud

This setup wouldn’t be possible without the crate. It’s what allows her dog to exist calmly in that environment — to reset, regulate, and not spiral into a monster.

And yet, people had opinions.

“Poor baby, stuck in a crate all day.” “That dog needs to get out and move around more.”

By the time she texted me, she was upset — and rightfully so. I wanted to jump through the phone and defend her myself, but she’d already stood her ground. (Love that for her.)

What I Told Her

We can’t control other people’s opinions or their limited understanding of what good dog ownership looks like. They don’t know the work it took to make this possible. They don’t see what would happen without that crate.

But you do. You know your dog. You know the hours, the effort, and the intention behind every choice you make.

So when comments like that get thrown your way, pause and remember the work you’ve put in. Let that speak louder than anyone else’s assumptions.

The Reminder

We all know how heavy those comments can feel — especially when you’ve worked your ass off just to make it this far. So before you let someone else’s opinion sink in, stop and remember the truth: You’ve earned the peace your dog has now.

Their comfort didn’t happen by accident. It happened because you showed up.

What is something you've gotten opinions about that has been a game changer for you and your dog?

Author’s Note

If this story hits home, share it with a friend who’s working through their own version of “people don’t get it.”Because they probably need the reminder too.
